Want to know what it’s like to stay at Welk Resorts San Diego? We’ve got you covered with everything we experienced during our stay here!
We recently had the opportunity to stay at Welk Resorts San Diego (in Escondido) and we wanted to share with you all that we loved at this property.
We have been to San Diego many times, but we have never really done anything in Escondido.
When we were offered a discounted rate of $80 for a one night stay, we just couldn’t pass it up.
You can see a full walk-through of our one bedroom in this video on our YouTube Channel.
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be a timeshare owner to stay at most timeshare resorts.
You can book directly or through your preferred 3rd party platform, just like you would any other hotel or resort.

Welk Resorts San Diego Review
We stayed on a Monday night and we were shocked at how busy it was.
I’m assuming most guests there live within a few hours and all had the same idea to just get out of town for a little bit.
The lobby has tons of brochures for things to do in San Diego and Temecula if you’re staying for a little while.
I grabbed all the brochures for Temecula just because we know we’ll be going there a lot for wine tastings.
This resort is sort of right in-between the two destinations, so it’s easy enough to visit either one if you’re venturing away from the resort.
Our Check In Experience
We checked in at 4 pm and had to wait in a little bit of a line, but that is to be expected at the peak check-in time.
At check-in you’ll get a map of the resort, information about resort activity schedules, dining options, and lists of other available amenities.
Luckily our building was pretty easy to find and parking was right outside, so we didn’t have to carry our bags too far.
This was especially good because our room was on the second level and a short walk made the stairs bearable.
One Bedroom Condo At Welk Resorts San Diego
I loved this entry way so that we could set down our keys and my purse and things like that as we entered.
The bedroom was spacious and had outlets in convenient places so that I could lay in bed and charge my phone and still play on it.
The Bathroom
The bathroom was really nice, but it’s definitely not conducive for getting ready if anybody but a couple is traveling together.
I prefer when there are separate spaces so multiple people can be getting ready at one time.
But for us it wasn’t a problem.
The shower had amazing water pressure which is the number one thing I care about in a shower.
I prefer rooms that have tubs so I can take bubble baths in the evening with a glass of wine, but we were so busy working it didn’t matter this time.
The Kitchen And Living Room
The living area was great.
I haven’t seen too many places that have an oven, so that was cool.
I’ve seen kitchens with the stove top, just not the oven.
The couch didn’t have any pillows and I think it is supposed to because the back of it is hard, but it didn’t really bother us.
We noticed there was a back patio and just outside on the ground level were grills and a hot tub.
Hot tubs were still closed at the time or that’s where I would’ve been spending my evening for sure.
Especially since our room didn’t have a tub.
Dining Options At Welk Resorts San Diego
Since this was a super last minute trip, we actually spent all of our time there in the room working.
Because of that, we ordered in dinner from the resort’s on-site restaurant.
At the time there was no dining-in available, so we just had to go down to the restaurant and carry our food back to our room.
Having that dining room table was great, since we’re used to standard hotel rooms and eating our food in bed.
We didn’t want to spend too much money since we were about to head to Vegas, so we shared an appetizer, entree, and dessert.
It was actually so much food that we ended up saving about half the onion rings in case we got hungry again before we left.
What we ended up ordering was a salad, burger with onion rings, and a chocolate cake for dessert.
It was all yummy and satisfying!
Where To Eat Away From The Resort
If you’re venturing away from Welk Resorts San Diego, there are quite a few foods to try in the San Diego area.
Alberto’s
There are many locations all over.
We always like to get California Burritos and rolled tacos (basically taquitos).
California Burritos are something they are known for and essentially what makes something a California Burrito is adding French fries in it!

There are restaurants in San Diego with wonderful views of the bay and the skyline views downtown.
Best Italian Restaurants In San Diego
Little Italy is a neighborhood in San Diego with some of the best Italian restaurants in Southern California, but it’s not the only area of San Diego with great Italian restaurants.

Being on the water with great weather all year, it’s no wonder that San Diego has some of the best seafood you can get in California.
Fun Places To Go When You’re Staying At Welk Resorts San Diego
While there are plenty of things to do at the resort, there are also a variety of destinations within a short drive that are all vastly different.
The Best Temecula Wineries
Temecula is only about 20 miles north of Welk Resorts San Diego, making it an easy wine tasting day trip.
We’ve been wine tasting all over the country and Temecula is one of our top 3 favorite wine regions – even better than Napa and Sonoma.
Ramona Valley Weekend Getaway Itinerary
Ramona is a small town in California that is about 25 miles southeast of Welk Resorts San Diego.
They have a budding wine region that has only come about in the past 15 years or so and they’re all small, family owned wineries.
Our favorite is Turtle Rock Ridge Winery, which is known for their Blue Sangria.
Things To Do In Julian
Just past Ramona, Julian is another small town in rural California.
It’s a historic gold rush town that today is known for their apple pies.
Their historic downtown is still very reminiscent of the gold rush days and it’s so different from the rest of Southern California.
It’s about 45 miles southeast of the resort.
Hidden Gems In Oceanside
Oceanside has a variety of activities from whale watching, to a historic California mission, and wine tasting rooms downtown.
Oceanside is less than 20 miles from the resort and is right on the ocean.
San Diego Urban Wineries Ultimate Guide
San Diego has quite a few urban wineries, which is essentially wine tasting rooms in the city as opposed to the rural vineyards.
Many of the tasting rooms offer wines from the surrounding vineyards in areas like Ramona that we mentioned above.
Best Things To Do In Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach is a neighborhood in San Diego that is known for it’s laid back beach culture, ocean views, and vibrant local businesses.
Best Things To Do In North Park
North Park is a neighborhood in San Diego that is bordered by Balboa Park to the north and Old Town to the west.
San Diego Zoo And La Jolla Day Trip
The San Diego Zoo and La Jolla combination is a great day trip from the resort.
La Jolla is where you can see all of these sea lions out in the wild, so it makes sense to pair this excursion with a trip to the San Diego Zoo.
San Diego Weekend Itinerary
There’s plenty of world class attractions all over San Diego that you can spend a weekend exploring quite a few of the top spots like the USS Midway Museum, Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, and more.

Our Favorite Timeshare Resorts In Southern California
Here are some more timeshare resorts we love to stay at in California.
Remember, you don’t have to be a timeshare owner to stay at any of these.
You can book them directly or through your preferred 3rd party booking platform just like you would any other hotel.
Riviera Oaks Resort & Racquet Club (near San Diego)
Riviera Oaks is a quiet resort in the town of Ramona, just outside of San Diego.
It’s a perfect getaway for wine tasting in Ramona or visiting the historic gold rush town of Julian.
Harrah’s Resort Southern California
Harrah’s is part of the Caesar’s Rewards program, so it’s really easy to get free stays.
We love their pool, especially the lazy river.
They even have the Hell’s Kitchen restaurant here now!
Riviera Beach & Shores Resort (Capistrano Beach, CA)
Riviera Beach & Shores Resort is an oceanfront property near the southern tip of Orange County, California.
It’s in a quiet area of the beach with hardly anybody else around.
We like coming down here for a few days at a time to enjoy the views and the peace and quiet.
Palm Canyon Resort (Palm Springs, California)
Palm Canyon Resort is our favorite timeshare resort in Palm Springs.
We love staying here for fun stay-cations every so often because it’s always discounted within 30-60 days or less of travel.
They have a great pool with a hot tub and water slides built into the rocks.
San Luis Bay Inn (Avila Beach, CA)
San Luis Bay Inn is situated just above Avila Beach on a hill top along the central coast of California.
It’s in walking distance to this quiet beach town and it’s boardwalk of shops and restaurants.
Conclusion: Welk Resorts San Diego One Bedroom Review
Here are my overall thoughts on this Welk Resorts San Diego one bedroom review.
The property was amazing and they have tons of free and paid for activities if you’re planning to stay for awhile.
The pool area looked awesome, though we didn’t get to go.
It is far away from everything, which we consider good.
The surrounding area is beautiful.
The property started a vineyard recently and is hoping to have their own exclusive wine, which would be awesome.
This is a great location if you want to take day trips into Temecula or down to San Diego.
The rooms are big, nice, and clean.
I would definitely stay here again.
It’s a great getaway for the semi-locals that live within a couple hours drive and just want to get away for a bit and enjoy the outdoors.
Before staying here I had never heard of them before.
Apparently I am too young to know who Lawrence Welk is.
JP knew though and had heard of the resort before.
Supposedly, the Welk Resorts were the original timeshare company in the US and that is their big claim to fame.
If their other resorts are on the same level as this one, I would gladly try out their other locations.
